Quality and Sourcing

Everything you need to know about how we source, test, document, and supply our products. No guesswork. No surprises.

About Cell Culture Collective

Drawing on 15+ years of life science supply experience, Cell Culture Collective provides curated cell and tissue culture reagents built for experimental performance: fetal bovine serum, recombinant proteins, serum albumins, surface-treated labware, and cryopreservation media. We source intentionally, document thoroughly, and support every order directly.

As a San Diego-based Woman-Owned Small Business (WOSB), Cell Culture Collective operates differently than typical catalog distributors. We function as a relationship-driven, curated supplier, a distinction that provides significant value to the laboratories we support.

Trusted by Leading Research Institutions

Our customers include research labs and core facilities at some of the most respected universities and research institutions in the country. The labs we serve run demanding workflows that require reliable reagents and a supplier they can count on.

Sourcing

We source intentionally, and we source each product category differently, based on what drives performance, consistency, and risk. Every product in our portfolio was chosen based on reliability and fit for the workflows our customers run. We maintain direct supplier relationships, which gives us visibility into lot availability, lead times, and quality before a product ships to you.

Supplier relationships

We partner with industry-leading brands and specialized boutique manufacturers for our branded products. These direct relationships provide faster access, better pricing, and real traceability.

Origin options

For fetal bovine serum products, we offer both U.S. origin and USDA Approved origins, giving you the flexibility to evaluate and choose what works best for your programs.

Hard-to-find products

If you need something you don't see here, ask. We have sourcing depth built on 15+ years of supplier relationships and can often locate products difficult to find through standard distributor channels.

Lot selection

For biological products, lot selection matters. We provide lot samples for FBS, serum products, and recombinant proteins so your team can evaluate a lot's performance before committing to a full purchase.

How we source by category

Fetal Bovine Sera (and Animal Serum)

Origin and traceability

  • Sourced from qualified collection facilities in documented countries of origin
  • FBS offered in four origin tiers: U.S., USDA-approved, Australian, New Zealand
  • Specialty animal sera (whole bovine, chicken, mouse, equine, porcine, goat, rabbit) sourced from the same qualified collection network
  • Every lot traceable from collection through delivery

Processing and QC

  • Triple 0.1 µm sterile filtration before release
  • Mycoplasma, sterility, and endotoxin tested on every lot
  • Heat-inactivated and gamma-irradiated grades available on request

Documentation available on every lot

  • Lot-specific Certificate of Analysis (CoA)
  • Country-of-origin certificate
  • BSE/TSE-free statement (bovine-derived products)
  • Supplier qualification record on request

Donor screening

  • Sourced exclusively from FDA-registered U.S. donor centers
  • Every donor pre-screened for: HIV-1, HIV-2, HBV, HCV, HTLV-I/II, syphilis
  • Screening conducted under cGMP-aligned protocols

Product types and use

  • Human AB Serum: pooled from AB-positive male donors
  • Pooled human serum (off-the-clot): pre-screened, processed for cell-culture compatibility
  • Lot-level processing method disclosed on every shipment

Quality testing on every lot

  • Sterility
  • Mycoplasma
  • Endotoxin
  • Donor screening summary

Our standard practice: Every lot ships with a CoA. No exceptions.

Bovine Serum Albumin (BSA)

  • Sourced from qualified U.S. and international bovine plasma
  • Purity grades available: Fraction V, Fatty-acid-free, IgG-free, Protease-free
  • Lot-specific CoA details purification method and residual contaminant testing

Human Serum Albumin (HSA)

  • Sourced from FDA-registered U.S. plasma centers
  • Same donor screening protocols as our human sera (HIV-1/2, HBV, HCV, HTLV-I/II, syphilis)
  • Lot-level CoA and donor screening summary included
  • Viral-inactivation statement available where applicable

Custom lots available

  • Specific purity grades, endotoxin levels, or pyrogen testing outside standard offering
  • Typical lead time: 4–6 weeks
  • Quote and lot specification confirmed before order

Expression and manufacturing

  • Produced under controlled-environment conditions with documented expression systems
  • Multiple species offered where applicable (Human, Murine, Bovine, Chicken, Tuna)
  • Animal-free / xeno-free formulations available across the CultureGro™ recombinant line

Quality testing on every lot

  • Purity by SDS-PAGE (typically ≥98%)
  • Endotoxin level reported per lot
  • Bioactivity assay (ED50 or equivalent activity measure)
  • Mass spectrometry or amino acid analysis on representative lots

Formulations available

  •  Lyophilized: long shelf life, ambient shipping, reconstitute on use
  • Animal-free options across the line for xeno-free and stem cell workflows

Documentation available on every lot

  • Lot-specific CoA: purity, endotoxin, activity
  • Reconstitution and storage protocol
  • Stability data sheet
  • Animal-free statement where applicable

Custom proteins

  • Custom expression, custom tags, custom species available
  • Volumes from research scale to bulk
  • Typical lead time: 6-10 weeks depending on construct complexity

Quality Control

Quality is not a checkbox for us. Every product we carry goes through verification before it enters our inventory. For biological products, that includes lot-specific testing and traceability documentation.

  • Certificate of Analysis (CoA) provided with every shipment
  • Lot-specific testing available for serum and biological products, including:
    • Endotoxin (LAL method)
    • Hemoglobin: red blood cell contamination
    • Total Protein and IgG: composition verification
    • Osmolality and pH: physiological parameters
    • Sterility and Mycoplasma: contamination screening
    • Cell Growth Promotion: functional performance
  • Third-party or additional testing available upon request
  • Pre-screen samples available for FBS, Human AB Serum, Recombinant Proteins and select biological products prior to lot commitment
  • Lot traceability records maintained and available on request

Need Specialized Testing?

If your protocol requires testing beyond our standard QC panel, let us know. We accommodate additional testing or treatments on a per-request basis. Contact us before placing your order.

Documentation

Every product ships with its documentation. No chasing, no delays. If you need something specific before your order, request it and we’ll turn it around within one business day.

Standard Documents

Certificate of Analysis (CoA), Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS), and product specifications are available for every product we carry. These ship with your order or can be requested in advance.

Lot Traceability

Full lot traceability records are maintained for all biological products. We can provide chain-of-custody documentation for FBS, serum, and other regulated materials.

Use our document request form on the site to submit a request. We typically turn around standard documents within one business day. For expedited requests, contact us directly.

Supply

FBS supply constraints are real. So is the pressure on labs to keep critical reagents in stock without over-buying. We manage that balance with our customers by offering flexible purchasing options, proactive communication on availability, and lot reservation for accounts with consistent demand.

  • Temperature-controlled storage for cold-chain products, including FBS, serum, and cryopreservation media.
  • Cold-chain inventory maintained locally in San Diego for fast, reliable west coast delivery.
  • Lot reservation available for high-demand biologicals: reserve your lot while testing
  • Backorder management handled proactively: we notify you early and offer alternatives before you run out
  • Sold Storage programs available for large orders requiring phased delivery

Planning Around FBS Supply?

Given current market conditions, we recommend reaching out early for annual or semi-annual planning. We can reserve specific lots and structure delivery schedules around your lab's usage to avoid disruption.
