Bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs) belong to the TGF-β superfamily, a group of structurally related signaling proteins. This superfamily is widely distributed in the body and plays diverse roles during prenatal and postnatal life. Like BMP-7, BMP-4 contributes significantly to bone and cartilage development and maintenance. Reduced BMP-4 expression is linked to various bone disorders, including Fibrodysplasia Ossificans Progressiva, an inherited condition.
E.coli-derived BMP-4 is a fully active homodimeric protein consisting of two 106 amino acid subunits, corresponding to amino acids 303-408 of the full-length BMP-4 precursor. The calculated molecular weight of Recombinant Human BMP-4 (E.coli-derived) is 23.9 kDa.
